On October 4th 2003 the mirror lab unveiled a 2 meter portable fully steerable radio telescope. After a couple of hours of tweeking the software and some annoying out of band interference the scope detected the radio galaxy Cygnus A at 1420Mhz. It was detected a full 20dB above the noise floor.
The dish uses a 1420Mhz hydrogen line LNA and choke
from
Radio Astronomy Supplies. And a 1420Mhz to 144Mhz
downconverter made by Down East Microwave.
The reciever is an
Icom PCR-1000 computer controlled radio.
Future 3 Meter Radio Telescope
This 3 meter dish was donated to the club a few years
ago and has been lying around gathering rust until
we could figure out what to do with it.
The original plan was to mount this dish in a trailer
for portable use. However the dish proved too large
to be practical. It now awaits a home in a permanent
location.
Radio Jove
The radio group is also working on a 20Mhz jove
reciever and antenna array to pick up Jupiter
emissions.
